   writer
   Born in Paris, Judith Gautier was the daughter of Théophile gautier and the Italian singer Ernesta Grisi. A Chinese mandarin who knew her father introduced her to the cultures of the Far East; she published an adaptation of Chinese poetry (Le Livre de jade, signed Judith Walter, 1867), and translations from the Japanese (Poèmes de la libellule, 1885). Besides novels inspired by the orient, she also wrote dramas. Her memoirs, published between 1902 and 1909, are of great interest, as she knew in her childhood and adolescence most of the great French writers of the period (gérard nerval, charles baudelaire, the dumas father and son, Gustave flaubert, edmond goncourt). Briefly married, Gautier was a friend of the German composer Richard Wagner and helped to make his works known in France.
